The MAGEC system for spinal lengthening in children with scoliosis

NICE has developed medical technology guidance on the MAGEC system for spinal lengthening in children with scoliosis.

NICE medical technologies guidance addresses specific technologies notified to NICE by manufacturers. The ‘case for adoption’ recommendations are based on the claimed advantages of introducing the specific technology compared with current management of the condition. This ‘case’ is reviewed against the evidence submitted and expert advice. If the case for adopting the technology is supported, then the technology has been found to offer advantages to patients and the NHS. The specific recommendations on individual technologies are not intended to limit use of other relevant technologies which may offer similar advantages.

NICE has said that the MAGEC system should be considered for children aged 2 and over with scoliosis, who need surgery to correct their curved spine. Hospital teams may want to use the MAGEC system because it avoids the need for repeated surgery to lengthen the rods. The MAGEC system can save money compared with conventional rods in the long term (after about 3 years).

About Scoliosis :

Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side. Although it is a complex three-dimensional deformity, on an X-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis may look more like an "S" or a "C", rather than a straight line. Scoliosis is typically classified as either congenital (caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth), idiopathic (cause unknown, subclassified as infantile, juvenile, adolescent, or adult, according to when onset occurred), or neuromuscular (having developed as a secondary symptom of another condition, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, or physical trauma). A lesser-known cause of scoliosis could be a condition called Chiari malformation.

Recent longitudinal studies reveal that the most common form of the condition, late-onset idiopathic scoliosis, is physiologically harmless and self-limiting. The rarer forms of scoliosis pose risks of complications.
Signs and symptoms

Patients having reached skeletal maturity are less likely to have a worsening case. Some severe cases of scoliosis can lead to diminishing lung capacity, putting pressure on the heart, and restricting physical activities.

The signs of scoliosis can include:

(1) : Uneven musculature on one side of the spine

(2) : A rib prominence and/or a prominent shoulder blade, caused by rotation
of the ribcage in thoracic scoliosis.

(3) :Uneven hips, arms or leg lengths.

(4) : Slow nerve action (in some cases)
